What to wear and what to bring to your surf lesson in Perth

So you've finally decided to give surfing a crack. Good shout!

Whether you're dreaming of gliding down a glassy green wave or just hoping not to fall off in the first three seconds, your surf lesson in Perth is going to be a blast. Before you hit the beach though, there's one big question every new surfer asks: what on earth do I wear and what do I bring?

Good news. At Go Surf Perth we like to keep things simple, salty and stress-free.

We provide all the gear you'll need for the lesson, so you can focus on the fun part. Still, showing up prepared makes the whole experience smoother, more comfortable and way more enjoyable.

Here's your complete guide to what to wear, what to bring and how to get ready for a memorable day in the waves.

What you need to wear to your surf lesson

Swimwear

This is the one non-negotiable. Under your wetsuit you'll be wearing your swimmers and trust us... you'll want something comfortable.

Think secure straps and bottoms that won't try to migrate south when you're popping up on the board.

You're going to be moving a lot, rolling around in the whitewater and laughing (or screaming) as waves hit you in the face. The last thing you want is a wardrobe malfunction.

A wetsuit (provided by us)

We take care of this part.

You won't have to figure out thicknesses or get stuck halfway in a wetsuit doing that awkward penguin shuffle. We've got a full range of wetsuits to keep you warm, comfy and flexible.

Perth's water can be fresh, especially in winter, and staying warm helps you relax and learn faster.

If it's your first time wearing a wetsuit, don't panic. They're meant to feel snug. They also make you floatier, which is very handy for people who haven't quite mastered staying on the board yet.

Sunscreen (also provided)

We live under the great Australian sun, which doesn't muck around.

Even on cloudy days you'll get a solid serving of UV. We provide sunscreen because we like you sun-kissed, not sun-cooked. But you're welcome to bring your own if you have a preferred brand or need a sensitive skin formula.

Optional: rash vest or surf shirt

Some people like an extra layer under their wetsuit for comfort. Totally optional.

If your skin's sensitive or you're prone to chafing, bringing a rashie along can make your session feel smoother. If you don't have one, no stress... the wetsuits do most of the work.

What to bring to your surf lesson

Your indemnity waiver form

When you book a lesson with our surf school, you’ll get a booking confirmation email with access to your Go Surf account. You can sign your digital waiver online before you even hit the beach. Not a fan of tech or just love pen and paper? No worries, we’ve got hard copies ready on the day too!

A towel

Possibly the most underrated item in all of surfdom.

After your session you'll want to dry off, wrap up, sit on something that isn't sand or proudly wear it like a cape. A towel is essential.

Bring one you don't mind getting a bit salty like a beach or travel towel.

A water bottle

Surfing’s sneaky cardio. Between paddling, popping up and laughing at your mates wiping out, you’ll burn plenty of energy. Staying hydrated helps you focus and keeps your body happy.

Bring a full water bottle because salty ocean water doesn’t count as hydration, no matter how much ends up in your mouth. And please take it with you after your lesson.

We’re dangerously close to launching a very successful second-hand drink bottle business.

A positive attitude

We know it sounds cheesy, but this might be the most important thing you bring.

Surfing’s challenging in the best way. You’ll fall, you’ll swallow half the ocean and there’ll be moments where your board feels slightly possessed. That’s all part of it.

Show up curious and willing to try again and again and you’ll have an amazing time.

And leave your ego at the door. I learned that the hard way snowboarding. I figured I’d jump on a board and cruise straight away. Instead, I spent a lot of time on the ground before admitting I needed help.

A chance run-in with a snowboard instructor and a few simple pointers changed everything. The same goes for surfing. Listen, laugh it off and trust the process.

A change of clothes (optional but very handy)

You won't want to wear salty swimmers on the drive home unless you enjoy marinating in your car.

Pack something comfy to slip into after the lesson. Bonus points if it's warm and snuggly on windy days.

Hair-ties or headbands

If you've got longer hair, you'll want it out of your face.

Nothing ruins a perfect pop-up like a mouthful of hair when you're trying to look like a future surf legend.

How to prepare before your surf lesson

You don't need to be an athlete to start your surfing journey. And you don't need to hold your breath for five minutes or crush 100 push-ups. But a little preparation can make your first lesson feel smoother and less like your arms are trying to detach from your body. Check out this article and try to incorporate a few of our tips below.

Watch a few surf clips

Watching surf videos is basically homework you can do from the couch.

Look for beginner surf lessons or even classic surf films just to get a feel for how surfers move. You'll see how they paddle, how they pop up and how they stay balanced.

No need to analyse like a sports scientist. Just absorb the vibe and get yourself excited.

Try a few surf-specific exercises

Again, nothing intense here. A couple of light movements can make your first lesson more comfortable:

  • Basic pop-up practice on the floor to get the motion in your system

  • Gentle stretching, especially hips, shoulders and lower back (functional movements)

  • Light cardio like a walk or jog to warm your body up

These small things help you feel more confident when it's time to jump on the board for real.

Go for a swim in the ocean

If you're not used to ocean conditions, a casual dip before your lesson can help you feel more at home in the water.

Get used to the waves, the currents and that refreshing feeling of sea spray on your face. Plus, it's a great excuse for a beach day. These are our favourites!

Get a good night's sleep

Surfing involves thinking, reacting, paddling, balancing and laughing all at once.

Showing up rested makes everything feel easier. Besides, nobody pops up gracefully when they're running on three hours of sleep and a dodgy servo coffee.

Why being prepared makes your lesson better

You might be wondering why preparation matters if Go Surf Perth already handles the equipment. Simple. Being prepared means:

  • You feel more comfortable

  • You learn faster

  • You enjoy yourself more

  • You're not distracted by things like loose swimwear or forgotten towels

Surfing is one of those rare activities where fun and challenge come in equal measure. The more relaxed and ready you are, the more you'll get out of your lesson. And who knows—today's foam board hero might be tomorrow's dawn patrol addict.
